Finally had a chance to listen to this — very interesting. I especially liked the discussion at the end about outputs v. outcomes. Just because something’s easy to measure (supposedly) doesn’t necessarily imply it’s a meaningful “metric.” Someone should do some “big data” analyses of the typical multiple choice questions that come with textbooks; often publishers outsource the job of writing them to grad students and in my opinion, most are awful. If this is our only way of measuring student learning, it’s very weak. The best question sets were the ones that categorized them (kind of like Bloom’s taxonomy).
